Combat Workshops

Learn the art of medieval combat in our active workshops.

Please note that if you are taking part in a workshop during the time when the photo session is taking place in the morning or when the signing session is taking place in the afternoon then please speak to a volunteer at the photo/signing session and we'll make sure you get your photographs/autographs as quickly as possible so you can get back to your workshop and only miss a small part of it.

Medieval Combat Workshop

Medieval Combat Group

Host: Historical Fencing NI

Qualified instructors from Historical Fencing NI will be holding beginners workshops offering lessons in the weapons described below.

Modern protective equipment will be supplied where necessary.

Tickets for all Medieval Combat Workshops cost £5.00 each. Online ticket sales open at 12.00 noon (UK time) on Saturday 24 September 2016. Please see the Medieval Combat Workshop tickets page for more details and to buy your tickets. Places for this workshop are limited to 12 people (or 10 in the case of the Staff workshop at 11 am). You must be aged 18 or more to take part.

Any participants who have had alcohol on the day will NOT be permitted to take part. Whilst we don't want to ruin anyone's fun, we also want to keep everyone safe. That means we don't put training weapons in the hands of anyone who has been drinking, no matter how little they've had.

Medieval Combat Workshop A - Longsword

Taught by: Matthew Malcolm
Time: 10.00 am
Room: Winterfell
Tickets: £5
Spaces available: 12

The archetypal knightly two-handed sword of the Medieval period. Longsword workshops will cover the basics set out for the unarmoured fencing with the longsword as used for judicial duels and self-defense in the early German sources. If you've ever wanted to know how Longclaw should really be used, this is the workshop for it.

Medieval Combat Workshop B - Staff

Taught by: Harold Turner
Time: 11.00 am
Room: Winterfell
Tickets: £5
Spaces available: 10

Much like the longsword, the staff needs very little introduction. The staff workshop will cover basic techniques that appear in almost every staff system around the globe, from Medieval manuals through to the martial arts of the Far East. Used by all classes and walks of life, the staff is a ubiquitous weapon, but one which taught important principles and forms a strong foundation for the use of swords, spears, polearms, and many other weapons.

Medieval Combat Workshop C - Scottish Broadsword

Taught by: Ross Bailey
Time: 12.00 pm
Room: Winterfell
Tickets: £5
Spaces available: 12

Not actually a Medieval weapon, this is the style of Scottish sword commonly seen throughout artwork from Culloden to the Napoleonic Wars and beyond. This basic level class will look at some of the techniques laid out in Roworth's 'Art of Defense on Foot' and Angelo's 'The Guards and Lessons of the Highland Broadsword'.

Medieval Combat Workshop D - Longsword or Messer

Taught by: Ross Bailey
Time: 8.00 pm
Room: Winterfell
Tickets: £5
Spaces available: 12

The weapon taught in this class will be whichever the majority of students would prefer.

For the description of the longsword, see Workshop A. The messer is a single-edged short sword used by many peasants and townsfolk for everyday defense. Messer workshops will cover some of the material set out in the 'Glasgow Fechtbuch' that gives a short 'how-to' description of the art of messer fighting, and will also showcase a few of the sneakier techniques from other sources, or those used in emergencies when finding yourself faced with someone with a bigger, heavier weapon.

Medieval Combat One-on-One Lessons

Host: Historical Fencing NI
Room: Winterfell

In addition to group workshops, Historical Fencing NI are offering special one-on-one lessons. There is no online ticket sale for One-on-One lessons, instead you may book your lesson at Historical Fencing NI's display table in the corridor outside the Winterfell Room on the day at TitanCon 2016. The following lessons are available:

1x Messer or Sickle lesson taught by Ross Bailey (10.00 am - 10.30 am)
1x Messer or Sickle lesson taught by Ross Bailey (11.00 am - 11.30 am)
1x Longsword or Sword & Buckler lesson taught by Matthew Malcolm (11.30 am - 12.00 pm)
1x Longsword or Sword & Buckler lesson taught by Matthew Malcolm (12.00 pm - 12.30 pm)
1x Staff lesson taught by Harold Turner (12.30 pm - 1.00 pm)

Please see the workshops above for weapon descriptions, but we do have some additional weapons available that are only on offer in One-on-One lessons:

Arming Sword & Buckler

The common Medieval single handed sword, used alongside the buckler (small shield) is the earliest weapon set we have a manual for the use of, and was one of the most common in the Medieval period. The sword and buckler techniques taught will be beginner suitable material drawn from the I.33 manual.

Sickle

Exactly as it sounds, the small single handed curved blade used for harvesting crops. One of the better illustrated compilations of Medieval and Renaissance fighting techniques includes a short section on the use of this common agricultural tool. Exceptionally nasty in use and an ancestor of sorts of a certain Dothraki weapon, lessons in the sickle will cover a few basic principles and a few unpleasant ways to end a fight.

Win a One-on-One Lesson in our Raffle

By the way Historical Fencing NI have kindly donated a One-on-One lesson as a prize in our Raffle Prize Draw at the Closing Ceremony. If your ticket wins and you select this as your prize you may take the lesson at any time on Saturday night, or book a day and time with Historical Fencing NI for your lesson.

Tai Chi

Instructor: Michele Gibson from Tai Chi N.I.
Time: 12.00 pm
Room: Syndicate 5 and 6

Enjoy a taster session in the peaceful and meditative martial art of Tai Chi. Although I am told that at last year's session they did some full contact sparring!

No tickets required for the Tai Chi session, just turn up and enjoy.

Chinese Broadsword

Host: Michele Gibson and David Brashaw

The Chinese Broadsword is an elegant and graceful weapon to use. This workshop will demonstrate the flowing techniques used to master this beautiful sword form.
