Costume Contest

The mainstay of our evening entertainment at TitanCon over the last five years has been our Masquerade contest. But this year we have decided to do something a little different and therefore we proudly present the inaugural TitanCon Lovely Beard Contest. It's like Crufts - only for beards!

But we still want to provide an opportunity for people to show off their love of costume making and we would like to encourage more people to dress up for TitanCon, so we've decided to start a Costume Contest that will run throughout the day at TitanCon on Saturday 1 October.

Here's how it works. When everyone arrives at TitanCon and picks up their membership badges they will also be given three Costume Contest tokens that they can give to their favourite costumed attendees. They could give one to each of their three favourites or all three in one go if they really love it. Costume Contest entrants will need to return their collected tokens to our reception desk by 5.30 pm at the latest. The entrant with the most tokens will be declared the winner during the Closing Ceremony at 6.30 pm. We have a fabulous prize on offer for the best costume.

So it's time to start getting your costumes ready, good luck to all entrants!

Costume Contest rules

  1. Shop bought or hired costumes are allowed, though people are more likely to be impressed by a costume you have made yourself. We hope that many of you will join in just for fun so please feel free to attend in costumes of any kind whether you've bought, hired or owned them for years.
  2. Just because we have a strong Game of Thrones theme at TitanCon does not mean you have to dress up as a character from the show, we welcome costumes from any theme in the SF/F genre, which is a pretty broad scope to choose from.
  3. TitanCon is a family event taking place in a public hotel so costumes must meet PG-13 standards, therefore no nudity or inappropriate costumes please. If your costume is deemed to be in appropriate you will be asked to get changed into regular clothes or asked to leave if you cannot or refuse to change.
  4. If a weapon is part of your costume you must ensure it remains sheathed at all times. Blades must be peace bonded (ie: tied up). Weapons may be confiscated on safety grounds. Confiscated weapons will be returned to you at the end of the day. Please see our Code of Conduct for more information.
  5. Entrants must deposit their Costume Contest tokens to the Reception desk by 5.30 pm at the latest. Tokens returned after this time may not count in the final talley.
  6. Entrants do not have to return all Costume Contest tokens in a single visit. Entrants may deposit their tokens, go off to collect more and return those later, so long as the final deposit is before the closing time of 5.30 pm.
  7. Photocopied tokens will NOT be accepted.
  8. The final count and the judges decision is final.
  9. The winner will be announced during the Closing Ceremony at 6.30 pm. Winner must be present to collect their prize.

Some costume inspiration from TitanCon Masquerade history

Masquerade 2012

Over the years the TitanCon masquerade has been a brilliant success with some incredible costumes and memorable performances. Who could forget the hilarious wildling skit from our very first entrants in 2011 or the weirwood tree or the winning entry of Hodor carrying Bran in a basket. My highlight of the first year was Lysa Arryn rushing out into the audience to smother her son with kisses, thoroughly embarrassing him in the process.

Or how about the imaginative Frey Pie costume from 2012, the lookalike Petyr Baelish, the lost X-Wing pilot, street urchin Arya, or the entertaining seawater baptism by the eventual winners of the TitanCon 2012 masquerade, Balon and Asha/Yara Greyjoy. They do not sow (but they do sew).

Masquerade 2013

The entrants of the dramatic and memorable TitanCon 2013 Masquerade.

We only had four entrants in 2013 but the standard was exceptionally high with a sensational dance routine by the Sandsnakes, an entire family of hilarious backstabbing Lannisters with Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion joined by King Robert, and lastly the lovely Daenerys and Missandei. A really strong line up and unbelievably we ended up with a 3-way tie for first place with 19 votes each! Our fourth placed entrant (Pebble) decided that the 3 people that voted for her should pick the winner and they eventually decided on Daenerys and Missandei. Our winners were thrilled to have won since this was not only their first masquerade but the first convention they had ever attended.

Masquerade 2014

The TitanCon 2014 Masquerade entrants.

2014 saw the largest field of entrants with some truly beautiful costumes from the Titanconies crew that joined us last year. You could really see the huge amount of time and effort that went into the costumes for Ygritte, Margaery Tyrell, Robert Baratheon and Davos with his stinky onions. The 2014 winners were for once not dressed as Game of Thrones characters but had constructed a pair of Minion costumes from Despicable Me using hoops of bamboo cane and yellow cloth, proving that any kind of costume can win the TitanCon Masquerade.

The 2015 Masquerade was won by a pair of entrants from Brutal Ballet dressed as Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen. The costumes were made for their stage performance which some might see as something of an unfair advantage, but they were still home-made and therefore totally valid under the Masquerade rules.

An honourable mention has to be made to two entrants that dressed as Amazon warriors throughout the day at TitanCon 2015. They looked absolutly amazing with body paint and incredible feather headdresses. I know they went away disappointed to have been the only ones in costume through most of the day last year, most people only change for the Masquerade in the evening. Hopefully this Costume Contest will encourage more people to dress up for TitanCon. Please come and join in the fun!
